Application Guidelines
To be eligible for the Kalamazoo Valley Debt Forgiveness program, you must also re-apply to Kalamazoo Valley Community College. If you have yet to complete this step, please do so HERE. Our application for admission takes roughly 5-10 minutes to complete.

Your application for admission will be processed in 5-7 business days. In the meantime, please complete and submit the Kalamazoo Valley Debt Forgiveness Program application.

Overview
Kalamazoo Valley Community College has launched a program for students with a past due balance. The program is designed for students who are in good academic standing, have stopped out, and have an outstanding financial balance with Kalamazoo Valley. The program will require students to re-engage with Kalamazoo Valley and participate in success services designed to assist with degree/certificate completion. 

Student Eligibility Requirements*
  • Left Kalamazoo Valley with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Has not attended Kalamazoo Valley for at least six semesters
  • Has an outstanding balance of $2,500 or less
  • Has the ability to pay in full, sign up for the payment plan, or have financial aid cover the balance for the semester they will be re-enrolling at the time of registration (i.e. Student can cover charges for upcoming tuition and fees)
  • Has not already been awarded a degree or certificate from Kalamazoo Valley

Student Steps
  • Indicate interest by completing this application at least one month prior to the beginning of the semester they wish to initially re-enroll
  • Reapply and be readmitted to Kalamazoo Valley 
  • Establish, modify, or confirm an academic plan alongside an advisor or counselor
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Participate in regular coaching/tutoring/mentoring as outlined by program director
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater
  • Attain certificate or degree within 3 academic years of re-enrollment

Results
  • Your financial hold will be modified to allow for registration, grades, etc. as long as above items are met 
  • Your previous balance owed will be forgiven – 50% upon successful completion of 12 credits after re-enrolling under the Debt Forgiveness Program or degree program completion (whichever comes first) and the remaining 50% upon successful attainment of certificate or degree
  • Your financial hold will be removed upon successful completion of a certificate or degree

*Exceptions to the cumulative GPA requirement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Please read the following program guidelines, expectations and eligibility requirements prior to submitting your application.

  • I understand that submission of this application does not guarantee I will be accepted into Kalamazoo Valley's Debt Forgiveness Program.
  • I understand that I must pay in full, sign up for the Kalamazoo Valley payment plan, or be eligible and accept adequate financial aid to cover my tuition and fee balance at the time of registration each semester.
  • I understand that if awarded entry into the program, 50% of my previous overdue balance will be forgiven only after successful completion of 12 credit hours or successful completion of a degree/certificate program. Furthermore, I understand that the remaining 50% of my overdue balance will be forgiven upon successful attainment of a degree/certificate.
  • I understand that if awarded entry, the following expectations will be upheld:
    1. Establish, modify or confirm an academic plan with a counselor/advisor each year
    2. Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year
    3. Participation in regular coaching/tutoring/mentoring as outlined by program director
    4. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater to remain eligible
    5. Completion of degree/certificate program within three academic years of re-enrollment
